A freak-out group for the 21st century founded in 1995 by members of the Acid Mothers Temple soul-collective. Led by Kawabata Makoto.


1995
In 1995 the quartet of Kawabata Makoto (Musica Transonic, Mainliner, Toho Sara), Koizumi Hajime (ex. Mainliner, ex. Seventh Seal), Suhara Keizo (Arijigoku, Rashinban), and Cotton Casino (Mady Gura Blue Heaven) formed a new group and started to record their improvised jam sessions.
A group of social dropouts of every description – musicians, dancers, artists, farmers, channellers, ex-yakuza, mermaid researchers and professional vagrants – known as the Acid Mothers Temple Soul Collective, had already begun to coalesce around Kawabata. Then Higashi Hiroshi (ex.Yumejin) joined.


1996
In January, some local residents got the wrong end of the stick and assumed that their house was a hideout for members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult that had committed the gas attack on the Tokyo subway. In the end, they were forced to move out of the original Acid Mothers Temple Soul Collective house and their group began to transform from a hippie commune into a true collective of souls.
“Acid Mother’s Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O.” was released on cassette tape by Acid Mother’s Temple label.


1997
The group released 2 cassette tapes “Acid Mother’s Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. 1” and “Acid Mother’s Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. 2” on Acid Mother’s Temple.
ACID MOTHER’S TEMPLE have changed their name to ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE.
The group released their self-titled debut album on PSF Records (Japan) in November. The album was selected as one of the 50 best albums of the year by the British music magazine, The Wire.


1998
In January, the Acid Mothers Temple family record-label was set up, in order to document the various activities of the collective.
In June, the band played their first live gig in San Francisco, as part of a tour of America and Europe. In the UK, they headlined a bill which include The Pastels and Richard Youngs at the Psychedelic Trip Festival at the Glasgow School of Art. In Berlin, they collaborated with the NASA computer graphics animation team.
In August, the group played their first Japanese gig in Tokyo.In November, Japan tour. Tsuyama Atsushi (Omoide Hatoba) took part in this tour as a guitarist.


1999
In March, their second album “Pataphysical Freak Out MU!!” was released by PSF Records(Japan). Includes guest appearances by HACO (ex. After Dinner, HOAHIO), Tsuyama Atsushi.
From April to June the group toured America and Europe. From this tour, Tsuyama Atsushi joined the group on bass. This completed the current basic live line-up of the group. In this tour, they headlined the Deep Heaven Festival in Boston, but due to the massive volume the police were called and the festival was forcibly closed down. The group headlined at the first day of the Fete de l’Humanite in Toulouse, France.
In September, the group toured the Western Japan.
In November the group released their soundtrack to the Russian underground film “Wild Gals a Go-GO” on the Acid Mothers Temple label.


2000
“Live in Occident” a double LP document of the 1999 tour of the US and Europe was released by the Detector (USA).
On April, the group played their first gig in seven months, headlining at the Psychedelic Festival in Osaka.
LP of covers of Occitan traditional song “La Nòvia” was released from Eclipse Records(US) on October.
The group’s official third album “Troubadours From Another Heavenly World” was also released from PSF (Japan) on October.
From November to December the group toured America and Europe(UK,Belgium,Norway,Germany and France).


2001
2LP “Absolutely Freak Out (Zap Your Mind!)” was released by Static Caravan-Rsonant (UK).
“New Geocentric World of Acid Mothers Temple” was released on CD by the Squealer Music (USA).
In March, played with Stockhausen & Walkman in Nagoya. This was the first gig to feature Ichiraku Yoshimitsu (aka.Doravideo, Otomo Yoshihide’s ISO). This was also the first live appearance in Japan in over a year.
The “Master of the Universe” commemorative tour double-EP was released on Static Caravan-Resonant (UK).
“La Nòvia” was reissued on CD by Swordfish Records (UK).
The “Grateful Head” US tour EP was released on Wabana (USA).
In May, toured the UK and Ireland. The tour was a massive success, with all dates being sold out. The group closed out the second and final day of the Le Weekend Festival For Inventive Music & Sound with a two and a half hour set. Kawabata played solo on the previous day. The group jammed with Julian Cope in Nottingham.
The UK tour EP, “My Guitar Wants To Kiss Your Mama” was released on the Static Caravan-Resonance (UK).
September, US tour. Due to the September 11th terrorist attacks, the group’s headlining spot at the CMJ Music Marathon was cancelled. The venue, the Knitting Factory, was closed.
In October, toured the UK and Ireland. The group garnered attention in Mojo and other magazines. Another highlight was a slot at the Royal Festival Hall, playing with Gong and The Orb.
Eclipse Records (USA) released on LP the AMT cover of the Terry Riley track “In C”.
In December, tour of the Western Japan. The first date in Nagoya and the final date in Osaka, features the twin drum attack of Ichiraku Yoshimitsu and Koizumi Hajime.


2002
The picture 12″LP “41st Century Splendid Man” was released on tUMULt (USA).
The 2nd album, “Pataphysical Freak Out MU!” was reissued as a 2LP on Eclipse Records (USA).
“Absolutely Freak Out (Zap Your Mind!)” was reissued on Static Caravan-Resonant (UK), this time as a double CD with the addition of a 45 minute bonus track.
The live LP “Born To Be Wild in The USA 2000” was released on Wababa (USA).
Squealer Music (USA) reissued the AMT cover of the Terry Riley track “In C” as a CD.
In March and April, toured the US and UK/Ireland. The group appear at the South by Southwest Festinal in Austin. They are selected as one of the best three groups at the festival. They also perform an improvised soundtrack to the film “Urotsukidoji : Legend of the Overfiend” at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall.
Earworm Records (UK) released 3CD Acid Mothers Temple Family compilation “Do Whatever You Want, Don’t Do Whatever You Don’t Want!!”.
Squealer Music (USA) reissued “New Geocentric World of Acid Mothers Temple” as 2LP.
The group released 4 new albums and 2EPs from September to November.
Alien8 Recording (Canada) released the 7th album, “Electric Heavyland”.
The Acid Mothers Temple lebel released the live album “Live in Japan”.
Fractal Records (France) released the 6th album, “Univers Zen ou de Zéro à Zéro” and the “Electric Love Machine” EP.
The group released “St.Captain Freak Out & The Magic Bamboo Request” on Ektro Records (Finland). This album is an AMT-style trip opera, based around the adventures of a character called St.Captain Freak Out.
The Scandinavian tour EP, “The Tombstone Phantom Drifter” was released on Verdura (Finland).
In October, toured the US and Canada. The group perform as the headlining act on the final day of the Terrastock.5 festival in Boston.
From Ocober to December, toured Sandinavia and Europe (Norway, Finland, Estonia, Switzerland, Croatia, Italy and France). The group perform as the headlining act of the Estonian rock festival Operation B in Tallinn. They perform a collaborative concert with the Occitan trad singer Rosina de Paira in Toulouse.
In December, the group played their first gig the Acid Mothers Temple Festival Vol.1 in their home Nagoya as the final date of the tour. This was also the first live appearance in Japan in over a year.


2003
Kawabata Makoto and Cotton Casino joined Daevid Allen’s GONG (ex.you’N’gong).
Important Records (USA) released 3 titles of 3″CD-singles “Magical Power From Mars series” between January and March, also the label reissued as 1CD “Magical Power From Mars”.
Galactic Zoo Disc (USA) released the live LP “The Day Before The Sky Fell In America Spt.10.2002”.
Fractal Records (France) reissued “Univers Zen ou de Zéro à Zéro” as a 4LP set with one bonus disc of unreleased live-recordings.
The Acid Mothers Temple lebel released the live album “Last Concert in Tokyo”.
Funfundvierzig (Germany) released a split cd “A Thousand Shades Of Gray” with Escapade.
Sub Pop (USA) released a split album with Kinski.
ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE mode HHH (Kawabata Makoto, Tsuyama Atsushi and Yoshida Tatsuya of Ruins) toured Europe (Norway, Sweden, Poland, Austria, Germany, UK, Netherland, Belgium, France, Spain, Switzerland, Greece, Italy) as the one part of Japanese New Music Festival tour in October and November. They perform an improvised soundtrack to the Ira Cohen’s film “The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda” at Kill Your Timid Nortion festival in Dandee Scotland. Also they perform at Newton Festival di Musiche Contemporanee in Latina Italy.
ACID MOTHERS GONG (Acid Mothers Temple + Gong) perform at the Royal Festival Hall in London UK with Damo Suzuki and Incledible String Band in October.
In December in their hometown of Nagoya they hold the AMT Festival Vol.2. Yamazaki Maso (Masonna, Space Machine) joined them as a special guest. This was the first live appearance in Japan in over a year.


2004
ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE mode HHH (Yoshida Tatsuya, Tsuyama Atsushi, Kawabata Makoto) have changed their name to ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR. ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR has operated as a permanent unit.
In March, At the invitation of Mogwai played at All Tomorrow’s Party UK.
Original member Cotton Casino left the group.
In April, Tour Japan as ACID MOTHERS GONG. (8 gigs in total)
Alien 8 Recordings (Canada) released “Mantra of Love”, included an Occitan trad cover “La Le Lo”.
“Born To Be Wild in The USA 2000” was reissued on CD by Wabana (USA).
The US tour CD “Hypnotic Liquid Machine From The Golden Utopia” was released on Acid Mothers Temple label.
In May, AMT Festival (special event for Audrey Ginestet’s AMT documentary film “dokonan”) held in Osaka. Screenings of Audrey Ginestet’s AMT documentary film “dokonan”. This was the first gig after Cotton left the group
In May and June, US & Canadian tour. The group performed at Festival International Musique Actuelle in Canada.
A collaboration single with Ultrasound “In G” was released on 10″EP by Time-Lag Records (USA).
Mandarinasre Records (Argentin) released the radio studio live album”The Night Before The Sky Fell in America 10th Sep. 2001″.
“Wild Gals A Go Go” was reissued on 2LP by Eclipse Records (USA)
In October, AMT film concert held in Tokyo. Screenings concert films of their 2002 performance with Rosina de Peira in Toulouse and 2004 performance in Philadelphia.
The group released 4 new albums from September to November.

Kawabata, Tsuyama and Higashi formed ACID MOTHERS AFRIRAMPO with Oni and Pika from Afrirampo.ACID MOTHERS AFRIRAMPO released their first album “We Are Acid Mothers Afrirampo!!” on Acid Mothers Temple label.
In October and November, European tour (UK, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, France, Croatia, Slovenia, Poland, Italy and Greece). The group performed at Ochre 10 Festival in UK, The sound and litterature festival LIPS in Denmark, La Malterie Hors D’elle in France, Musica 90 festival and Festival Comunicativo in Italy.
In December in their hometown of Nagoya they hold the AMT Festival Vol.3. Afrirampo joined them as a special guest.


2005
ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR’s first album “SWR” has been released by Very Friendly Records. (UK)
In March, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR toured Japan.
Kawabata formed ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO with Higashi Hiroshi (syn, g), Tabata Mitsuru (b, from Zeni Geva, ex.Boredoms), Okano Futoshi (dr: Hijokaidan, ex.Ghost, ex.Subvert Blaze), Shimura Koji (dr: Miminokoto, ex.High Rise, White Heaven). The group has been born out of the line-up of Kawabata Makoto & The Mothers Of Invasion mk3 (aka.Acid Mothers Of Invasion).

in September and October ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO toured USA. They cancelled their fist 10 shows by the problem of acquiring visas. The group played “In C” at Terry Riley’s 70th Birthday Celebration at UCLA.
In December, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO played at All Tomorrow’s Party UK at the invitation of Mars Volta.
A doubl live LP “Good-bye John Peel : Live in London 2004” was released by Dirter Promotion (UK).
In October in Osaka they hold the AMT Festival (extra). ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE Volunteers played with Hiroshi-Nar and Ito Seiko.

2006
ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO released 5th CD “Darkness And Bible Black Sabbath” from Alien8 Recordings (Canada).
Tsuyama formed ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE INCREDIBLE STRANGE BAND with Tsuyama Akiko (vo.), Suhara Keizo (b), Aiko (dr. ex.Noizuwarcame) and Kawabata Makoto (e.sitar, violin, etc.).
ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR toured Japan as the one part of Japanese New Music Festival tour in March.
ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR toured China as the one part of Japanese New Music Festival tour in March and April.

Tsuyama and Kawabata formed ACID GURUS TEMPLE with Mani Neumeire (Guru Guru). in December, ACID GURUS TEMPLE toured in Japan. Mani Neumeire has changed their name to ACID MOTHERS GURU GURU.

2007

ACID MOTHERS GURU GURU released 1st album “Psychedelic Navigator” from Importabt Records (US).
ACID MOTHERS GURU GURU toured USA in August and September.
In September, played as the headlining act at Mangetsusai 2007 (Full Moon Festival) in Miyajima Hiroshima.
In October, played at New Picnic in Taiyokoen festival in Himeji. Pikachu (Afrirampo) joined them as a guest drummer.

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE INCREDIBLE STRANGE BAND disbanded.Tsuyama Atsushi formed ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & MELTING COSMIC BLUES BAND with Tabata Mitsuru, Shimura Koji and Kawabata Makoto.

2009
In January, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR with UMEZU KAZUTOKI toured Japan.
In February, ACID MOTHERS GURU GURU cancelled Australian tour from Kawabata’s illness.
In March, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR and ACID MOTHERS GURU GURU toured Japan as parts of Guru Guru Fest tour.
ACID MOTHERS GURU GURU released 2nd album “Underdogg Express” from FünfUndVierzig (Germany).
“Lord of the Underground : Vishnu and the Magic Elixir” was released on CD and LP from Alien8 Recordings (Canada).

In April, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. toured the USA and Canada.
In June and July, Japan tour with Kinski. The group performed as ACID MOTHERS KAIDAN with Japanese king of noise group Hijokaidan in Tokyo. ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & MELTING COSMIC BLUES BAND played with Geoff Leigh (ex.Henry Cow) in Kyoto.
In August, the special unit ACID MOTHERS GURU GURU GONG performed at Zappanale #20 in Germany. ACID MOTHERS GURU GURU GONG are Kawabata Makoto, Daevid Allen (Gong), Mani Neumeier (Guru Guru) and Guy Segers (ex.Universe Zero).
In October, ACID MOTHERS DORAVIDEO toured Western Japan. ACID MOTHERS DORAVIDEO are Kawabata Makoto (g), Ichiraku Yoshimitsu (dr, doravideo) and Higashi Hiroshi (syn) as a guest.
In December in their hometown of Nagoya they hold the AMT Festival Vol.8 “Mega Psychedelia”. Yamamoto Seiichi (Boredoms), Tabata Mitsuru (Zeni Geva) and the liquid lighting team OHPIA joined them as special guests.
ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & ICHIRAKU YOSHIMITSU (ACIDORAVIDEO MOTHERS TEMPLE) released a live CD “AMT Festival Vol.7” on Acid Mothers Temple label.
The first greatest hits album “Zenkyokushuu” was released on cassette by Yokotin Label (Japan).


2010
In January, ACID MOTHERS DORAVIDEO headlined at “Enban Jamboree” in Tokyo. ACID MOTHERS DORAVIDEO are Kawabata Makoto (g) and Ichiraku Yoshimitsu (dr, doravideo).
In February, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR and ACID MOTHERS GURU GURU toured Japan as parts of Guru Guru Fest tour.
In March and April, toured the USA, Canada and Mexico. The group performed 5 shows at “South by Southwest Festinal” in Austin. The group headlined at “MtyMx Festival” in Monterrey (Mexico), and performed “West by South West Festival” in Tucson (USA).
In May in Tokyo, they held the “Battle Of Acid Mothers Temple 2010”, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O., ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR and ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & MELTING COSMIC BLUES BAND, 4 Acid Mothers Temples played non-stop as the medley for 4 hours and half.
In November, European tour. (Italy, France, UK, Germany, Belgium, Spain) The group headlined at “Festintenda” in Mortegliano (Italy). The group headlined at “Villette Sonique Festival” in Paris (France) as ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & STEARICA ORCHESTRA.
In June, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO headlined at “Enban Jamboree” in Tokyo.

In July in Tokyo, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO held the “Acid Mothers Temple Summer Festival”. Pikacyu graduated from ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO.

In October, perform an improvised soundtrack to the special screening of a short preview cut of Shezad Dawood’s film “Piercing Brightness” at AND Festival in Liverpool UK.
In October and November, European tour. (Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Austria, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, UK, Ireland,) The group performed at Elevate Festival in Austria, Festival Periferias, MEM 2011 in Spain and Amplifest in Portugal. The group played with Nik Turner (Hawkwind) in Bridgend UK. They played “acoustic set” in 2nd show in London.
In December in their hometown of Nagoya they hold the AMT Festival Vol.10 “Giga Psychedelia”. Yamamoto Seiichi (Boredoms), Tabata Mitsuru (Zeni Geva) and the liquid lighting team dbqp joined them as special guests.
A book & 2 CD “Kraut ‘n’ Rock: Neumeier & Guru Guru Grooves” was released from Heupferd Musik (Germany). Including tracks of ACID MOTHERS GURU GURU.

2013
in February ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO toured in Taiwan.
in March in Tokyo, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO hold the psychedelic disco event Space Disco Night Tokyo. Pikacyu joined them as a special guest. Changchang (Hibushibire, IVIZA) joined them as a support guitarist.

Kawabata formed ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & SPACE PARANOID with Higashi Hiroshi (syn), Tabata Mitsuru (b) and Okano Futoshi (dr: Hijokaidan, ex.AMT & The Cosmic Inferno, ex.Ghost, ex.Subvert Blaze) at the request of their Spanish booking agent, who wanted to see Acid Mothers Temple playing Black Sabbath.
ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & SPACE PARANOID released 1st album “Black Magic Satori” on CD from Chaotic Noise Recordings (Japan) and LP from Safety Meeting (USA).

In February, Chinese tour with liquid lighting team liquidbiupil was cancelled by Chinese authorities.

In April & May, tour in USA and Canada. The group headlined at Austin Psych Fest.
In June, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & PACE PARANOID toured in Western Japan.
In August, in Tokyo they hold “AMT UK Tour Eve” with liquid lighting team liquidbiupil.
In August, tour in Netherlands and UK. The group performed Zomerparfeest in Netherlands, Doune the Rabbit Hole festival in UK and headlined Row Power Festival in UK.

2016
In January Wolf (aka. S/T, ex.Green Milk From The Planet Orange, ShinzoKantsu) replaced Tsuyama Atsushi as the bassist of ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O.
In February, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO held the triumphant event of the last UK & Fence tour in Tokyo. Changchang (Hibushibire) joined them as a sport guitarist.
In March & April, tour in Mexico, US and Canada. The group headlined at NRMAL Festival in Mexico City.
In July, “Wake To A New Dawn of Another Astro Era” was released on CD and 2LP from Important Records (USA).
In July, tour in South Korea.
In July, in Tokyo they hold “Release party of the new album Wake To A New Dawn of Another Astro Era”.
In September & October, European tour (UK, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Czech, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands). The band performed at Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia in UK and Outfest in Portugal.
In December, in Nagoya they held the AMT Festival vol.15. The liquid lighting team liquidbiupil and PIKA (Afrirampo) joined them as special guests.
In December, toured in Western Japan, , and headlined at “Acid Noise Fest 2016 in Kochi.


2017

In April & May, tour in US and Canada.
In April, “Astro Infinity Discotheque” was released on CD from Acid Mothers Temple label.
In July,played in Tokyo and Kyoto. The group collaborated with the experimental performance group “Anti-Body” at Kyoto University Sibukodo hall.
In August, toured in New Zealand and Australia. The group headlined at “Supersense″ in Melbourne.
In September, “Astro Infinity Discotheque” was released on 2LP from Bam Balam Records (France).
In September & October, European tour (UK, Ireland, France, Austria, Croatia, Czech, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Greece, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands). The group headlined at “Levitation” in Angers France and “Rock In Opposition” in Albi France.
In October, “Those Who Came Never Before” was released on CD from Nod And Smile (USA).
in November and December, will tour in South America (Perú, Chile, Argentina, Brasil), the group will perform at “Festival Integraciones” in Lima Perú.
in November, “Either The Fragmented Body Or The Reconstituted Soul” will be released on CD from Necio Records (Perú), “Wandering The Outer Space” will be released on CD from Buh Records (Perú), “Electric Dream Ecstasy” on CD from Essence Music (Brazil).
In December, in Nagoya they will hold the AMT Festival vol.16. The liquid lighting team liquidbiupil and the singer Jyonson Tsu will join them as special guests.
In December, will tour in Western Japan.
